The following are links to sites I've found while doing research for this story. The list isn't exhaustive, since I've intentionally left out sites I think might give spoilers, but my hope is that there's enough here to let you figure out if the story is right for you (or give you something extra to read afterwards). However, I ask that you try not to infer too many specifics based on what you find on these sites. I write fiction, not fact, and will completely ignore reality if I think it'll make the story better.

To begin building my fictional universe, I needed to know the basics of how big our galaxy is, how many stars, etc. This let me do some basic math regarding the potential number of sentient species that could populate our galaxy.

I originally started with the idea of every star in the galaxy having the potential to support life (completely unrealistic). Learning about the different types of stars helped me reduce my starting number to a more accurate amount. Of course, my math after that is completely made up, but even the scientists haven't been able to figure this one out, so at least I'm unlikely to be proven flat out wrong during my lifetime.
