Especially for you

In honor of your retirement
I thought I'd take the opportunity
To write something
Especially for you
To wish you well in this next phase
Of your journey

I've worked with you for nine years
During that time we've become friends
You've definitely had an effect on my life
I will miss you when you're gone
I've always believed that we give pieces
Of ourselves away to the people
We love and care for
And when they leave us
They take those pieces
With them when they go

The piece of you
That I will keep for myself
Is the gift of your generosity
I will never forget what you did for me
When I wrecked my car
You helped out in my time of need
In a way that no one else did
You gave me back my sense of independence
Which I greatly appreciated
So, in remembrance of your kindness
I've included a photo of me with the new car

And these are the gifts of myself that I give
Especially for you
Just a little something to remember me by
This poem and a few photographs
One of Kodi and I on our wedding day
While the others are some of my personal favorites

And finally, here's my wish for you
To please take care of yourself
May you find happiness and contentment
In whatever the future holds
May you find the courage to face
The challenging days ahead
With the love and support
Of family and friends
All of which is meant
Especially for you!

Happy Retirement, Joan!

Author's Notes

Obviously, this poem was written for a co-worker who was retiring. She didn't want a huge production for the occasion. I think she really wanted to leave by sneaking out the door. But of course, there were people in our department that refused to let that happen. My boss was one of them. He came up with the idea of giving her a scrapbook. Everyone that wanted to participate would get a page to decorate however they wished. This is what I chose to do.

And here are the pictures (with their colored borders) that I printed out and cut out with a craft knife and pasted on either side of the poem.
