I Will Remember

I was driving home from work tonight
When I got stopped at a red light
A Rick Astley song came on the radio
I smiled and slowly closed my eyes
As the music took me back in time
In my mind I watched the scene before me
I could see it like it was yesterday
Even though it's been many years

The doors were flung open wide
On your light blue VW beetle
With "Never Gonna Give You Up"
Blasting from inside the car
As the two of you shagged
In the parking lot at Eastside
I loved to watch you guys dance
That Grand Strand original
One that I could never master
You always looked so happy
Twisting and turning, smiling
As you caught each other's hands
Always smiling when you danced

Driving down Main Street
I recalled all the other times
That I watched you two dance
In the kitchen, the living room
At the bar, even in the parking lot
Where you both worked
I still admire that carefree attitude
If there was beach music playing
You'd be on your feet and
The furniture would be pushed aside
Those have to be some of my favorite times
From when it was just the four of us
The memories never fail
To make me smile or warm my heart
They also make me a little sad, too
Because those days are gone now
And we'll never have them again

But I can make you a promise
Whenever I hear that music
No matter where I am
Or how old I may be
I will remember
I will always remember

Author's Notes

This poem was written for my good friends Georgia and Aloha. It honors the friendship that Wolfmoon and I shared with them.

I was on my way home from work when a song came on the radio. It reminded me of days gone by, and of just how close our friendship was back then, and that even though life is very different for all four of us today, they were and still are very important to me.

The days we spent together are forever etched on my soul, and I will always remember them with fondness and a smile.
