What's in a name?

Got another card in the mail today
As I walked back to the house
I recognized the handwriting
Before I saw the return label

It was addressed to Corene & Kodi
For a brief second I wondered
Was it hard to put those names together
To put her name there where yours used to be

I can only assume you felt a little twinge
At writing them together
As I did at seeing her name in place
Of yours and in your own handwriting

I'm sure it would have bothered me
If I'd been the one to send the two of you a card
But that's something I have yet to do
To actually write your names together

Our names were together for a long time
Much longer than they have been separated
Hopefully it won't always be strange
Not seeing them combined

So what's in a name
Sometimes a little pain...

Author's Notes

It never fails to amaze me that it's the simplest things that make me want to write. My ex had sent Kodi and me a Christmas card. We had received several cards addressed in the very manner that my ex had used. None of those bothered me in the slightest, but I think what got to me was the combination of seeing my ex's handwriting and Kodi's name instead of hers (it's also a four letter name). It was just a little unsettling for a moment. I guess I still haven't quite gotten used to seeing our names together yet.

And who knows, maybe next year I'll send them a Christmas card, too.
