Driving down the road
The radio plays
We're both lost
In our own thoughts
I watch the road
While you watch the scenery
I reach over and rub
The back of your hand
My heart skips a beat
A breath catches in my throat
As I feel the warm
Softness of your skin
I immediately recall my body
Having the same reaction
The very first time
I touched your hand
We decided we needed to meet
You decided to come here by bus
It would arrive here around 5pm
But you'd be in Raleigh early in the afternoon
So I drove the two and half hours to Raleigh
To pick you up at the bus station
I made it by the seat of my pants
I know how to read a map
I work with maps all day long
But I was so nervous and excited
That I didn't take the time to look
At the map before I left the house
I just assumed I knew where I was going
But I did take a map just in case
Once I got into the city
I soon realized I had no clue where I was
Things didn't look like the map
But I really didn't worry
I followed the signs that read Bus Station
Which worked 'cause I got there
A little late, but the bus was even later
I leaned up against the wall
Outside in the arrival area
Finally, it arrived 45 minutes later
The bus pulled up right where I was standing
I saw the long hair of someone sitting in the front
I thought it might be you
Then the doors opened
And people started getting off the bus
I didn't see that person again
Then all of a sudden
Someone moved out of the way
And there you were
You looked exhausted
You'd left Rochester the day before
But you managed to smile and wave
As you waited for your bags to be unloaded
Smiling, I just watched you
Standing there all butch
With your long dark hair
A flannel shirt tied around your waist
Pale blue jeans and mauve tank
Showing off those lovely biceps
I walked over to you
We said hello, you asked where I was parked
We put your bags in the trunk
We'd laughed and joked so many times
About our meeting for the first time
We'd joked that we'd get arrested
Or be asked to leave for kissing in public
I expected you to at least hug me
But instead you turned and walked
Toward the passenger door
I reached out and caught your arm
And asked where you were going so fast
I just wanted a hug, to make first contact
We hugged each other tight for a long moment
It felt so good to hold you in my arms
But when I started to release the hug
You wouldn't let me go
Instead you pulled me into
A very intense and passionate kiss
Which totally surprised me
So a hug and a kiss later
We were in my car
On our way out of the city
I'd given you the map
To help me figure out
Where the hell I was
But all I could think about was touching you
After three months of communicating
Long distance, you were finally here
Finally, here in North Carolina
You were so close, yet so far away
On the other side of the car
The need for more contact was rapidly increasing
I needed to feel that you were real
That you were finally here
Not just words on the screen
Or a voice on the phone
Not a dream or a figment of my imagination
But a live, warm-blooded woman
So, finally I decided to just do it
I reached over and touched your hand
Then it happened
I couldn't believe it
For an instant, time stood still
My heart skipped a beat
A breath caught in my throat
Your skin was so soft and so warm
You were real and so very much alive
And here touching me too
I loved the sensations
It was getting very hard
For either of us to concentrate
On the road or on the map
But I just kept driving
Our hands kept touching
We were getting so lost
So very lost in the feelings
Only our hands were touching
And yet it was so sensual
So erotic, so arousing
Finally, I just had to pull over
And take a look at the map
Fortunately, we figured out
That I had headed in the wrong direction
But it really didn't matter
We'd eventually get to my house
All I knew was that I never
Wanted to stop touching you
And that I would do anything
For the touch of your hand
