To Say Goodbye

This is your first trip
To the Atlantic Ocean
But it's our last night here
So we decide to take one more
Moonlit stroll along the beach
It's a perfect night

A few clouds in the sky
The reflection of the full moon
Glistening across the water
The breeze is warm
The waves gently wash over our feet
As we walk hand in hand

You stop and stand facing the ocean
About fifteen feet from the water's edge
I come up behind you
Slide my arms around your waist
You place your hands on mine
And lean back into me

We stand quietly like this for a while
You saying goodbye to the ocean
While I simply hold you
And softly kiss your neck
Your shoulder, your cheek
Just loving you, loving this place

Then I notice one lone wave
Come up the beach towards us
Closer than any other has before
The wave almost touches your toes
But doesn't, it only came
To say goodbye to you

Author's Notes

Sometimes, it's the simplest things that move me to write. We had been standing on the beach for five to ten minutes and waves would come towards us, but only within a foot or two. Then, one almost touched Kodi's feet. As I watched the wave come closer, I just smiled and thought, "Awe, it just came to say goodbye."
