Thoughts of You II

Driving home from work
I look ahead in the distance
And see this huge thunderhead
Stopped at the light
I watch the cloud change
And my thoughts drift to you
They seem to flow in your
Direction a lot these days
I imagined you and I on a hill
Lying on our backs, holding hands
Watching clouds float by
And you'd point out different things to me
I wonder just what you might
See in this thunderhead
As I drive on, I see a field of wild flowers
Red, pink and white poppies
I see us on a quilt
In the middle of that field
I'm sitting up while you are lying
With your head in my lap
I'm feeding you strawberries
After each one I lean down
And you pull me into a kiss
Even now days later
Riding down the road
With a friend, here at the beach
But my thoughts are with you
We're sitting atop a sand dune
Waiting for the sunset
From up here we have an incredible view
The beach, the ocean, the pastels of the sky
A pelican glides low over the water
So low, so close that the tip
Of its feathers touch a cresting wave
The pink sun still glistens off the water
The rhythm of the waves is as constant
As the beating of my heart
I'm sitting behind you
With my knees up on either side
Your arms lightly rest on my thighs
And your hands are on my knees
The breeze blows your hair
I catch it and move all of it
To the right side of your neck
Exposing the left side to my waiting mouth
I kiss, suck, nibble and run my tongue
Up and down the length of your neck
Your head drops back on my shoulder
I slide my hands around your waist
Pulling you tighter into me
You place your hands on top of mine
I whisper into your neck
"Kodi, I am so very happy
I finally found you
I finally have you
In my arms, in my life
I love you so much
I can't get enough of you
I'll never let you go"
I feel you smile and you
Turn your head towards me
And we kiss as the sun
Slowly sinks below the horizon
And we slowly melt into each other

Author's Notes

A friend and I had gone to the beach for my birthday. While I was there, all I could do was think about Kodi. When I returned home, I called Kodi and read her the poem. She totally amazed me. She knew which side I had moved her hair to, before I read the line, and that she had dropped her head back onto my shoulder.

No matter where we went that weekend, I was on the lookout for the perfect sand dune. I could see it in my mind, I just had to find it. I think this shot is pretty close.

As a present for our first anniversary, I framed the beach portion of this poem along with an 8x10 enlargement of this photograph for Kodi.
