All Grown Up

There comes a time
In everyone's life
When they realize
They must let go
Of the past

I've come to realize
That you are no longer
Just my baby brother
You are a man
With a home
Of your own
About to be wed

And with this realization
Comes the pain
Of knowing that
I'm not the one
Who has to fix
And make everything
Okay for you anymore

But all I've ever
Wanted for you
Is your happiness
I will always love you
Baby brother

Author's Notes

Obviously, this poem was written for my younger brother. I was over at his house, and he was upset about something. I began to realize he was an adult, and I couldn't fix his problems for him like I had when he was little.

Going back and reading these old poems has also helped me to understand that my codependent behavior actually started in my youth.
