For a long time it was just us
Our true feeling with no one
Could we really discuss
All we wanted was a friend
On whom we could depend
Someone who'd understand
Exactly where we stand

At first we were a little anxious
And just a bit cautious
We never expected to find
A touch so gentle, so kind
And much to our surprise
We found ourselves
Reflected in your eyes

With warm hearts
Smiles and open arms
You've taken us in
The search is over
We've found two dear friends

Author's Notes

Wolfmoon and I had been lovers for a little over two years. We had many straight friends, and there were a few straight couples with whom we hung out. They were all very accepting of us, but it felt as though something was still missing. We were lonely for the company of our own kind. In 1986, Wolfmoon and I met Georgia and her lover Aloha (both names are pseudonyms) at the mall. Georgia is a southern gentlewoman, born and raised in North Carolina, and Aloha, with her beautiful smile, is of Hawaiian and Portuguese descent, originally from California.

Wolfmoon and Georgia had actually met the year before, when they were in the same CPR class together. We all worked for the same local government, but in different departments. They invited us into their home and into their lives, and we became really close friends.

This poem was written for the first anniversary of our meeting Georgia and Aloha. When we first met them, we were both still living at home with our parents, but four months after this poem was written, Wolfmoon and I moved out and into a house of our very own. I believe it was due to the love and support of Georgia and Aloha because they gave us a safe place to be gay, and their example that two women could indeed make it on their own.
