Welcome

Welcome to my poetry site. All of the poems (and one story so far) have been written by me, Roarin' Fire. Some people might consider them to be of an "alternative" nature due to their lesbian subject matter, but for me, the poems are simply about my life. They chronicle over twenty years of my journey; from breaking off the engagement with my male fiancé, to my first lesbian relationship; from the commitment ceremony (which I refer to as my wedding or my marriage throughout the site), the affair, the threesome, and the end of my marriage, to falling head over heels in love with Kodi Wolf (who I think is an extremely talented bard of the Xena-verse), to divorcing my ex, to planning my wedding to Kodi, and finally to our handfasting ceremony and beyond.

It was actually my ex-wife, Wolfmoon, who was the first person to suggest that I write. I had read some of her poetry, and she suggested that it was a way to lessen my pain, to help me get over a broken heart (the one my male fiancé caused). And it did. By putting the pain down on paper, I stopped carrying so much of it around with me all the time.

I have never had any formal training on how to write poetry. I have thought about taking a poetry writing class before, but I was always put off by the idea of having to write on demand. It's something that I'm not sure whether I could do or not: write simply for the sake of writing, and then have someone criticize my work.

Therefore, I don't write using pretentious words that you'll need a dictionary to understand. My words come from my heart. You won't come away from reading my work thinking, "What the hell was she talking about?" I write when I am moved to write, when the words burn at my insides to come out. I write to say things that I have trouble saying otherwise.

The author's notes, on the other hand, were Kodi's idea. Back when we were originally creating my website and reading through all my old poems, Kodi was constantly asking me to tell her the back-story behind them. I didn't really mind telling her about all those stories. I figured it was just a way for her to get to know my history and me as well. Kodi thought that the stories were just as interesting as the poems were and suggested that the reading public would probably like to hear those stories as well. So, my author's notes were born.

Over time, my opinion of the author's notes has changed. At first, I saw them as something I did for the public, but I've since started writing really long author's notes. I believe I'm a little more comfortable with the format than I used to be, and I've begun to view the author's notes as a sort of therapy session for me, where I take a look at difficult subjects and try to figure out the real meanings or emotions behind the words of the poem. It's a way for me to deal with hard issues to help me heal.

Since January of 2003, I've been trying to deal with some difficult issues, and I've found writing the author's notes to be very helpful. In order for me to explain the emotion behind a poem, I first must understand it, and depending on the emotional intensity of the poem, I may not be ready to take a closer look at those feelings immediately, so sometimes I'll wait and give the poem some distance until I am ready to deal with the emotions. Then, once I've written the author's notes and am happy with them, I post the poems and update my site.

In other words, the author's notes have started meaning more to me than ever before, which is a good thing. I'm writing them for me now, not just for my reading public.

Well, I hope you enjoy reading my poems and author's notes as much as I've enjoyed writing them.

About the Site

The poems are divided into sections based on the decade in which they were written. Each section lists the poems from that time in chronological order. At the end of each poem, you'll find the Author's Notes, which I have written to give some idea of what inspired the poem, or where my head was at, at the time. I have also included a few of my own photographs throughout the site.
